Recognition at Graduation
The Honors Program is proud of its graduates. Honors students who graduate with Honors are recognized for their Honors learning experiences.

Latin Designation - Students who complete the requirements of the Honors Program and fulfill all university, college and major requirements with the specified GPA both in the major program and overall, based upon at least 96 credits in courses graded "A" through "F," qualify for a Latin designation. At least 64 semester credits must be earned in residence at the university in courses graded "A" through "F." Transfer students must satisfy the university requirements and have a combined transfer-university GPA that satisfies the minimum, specified total.

Summa Cum Laude - meaning "with the highest praise" is the highest distinction awarded at graduation. To graduate summa cum laude, a student must achieve a 3.9 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale with a grade of "A" on the Senior Honors Thesis/Project.

Magna Cum Laude - meaning "with great praise” is the second highest distinction awarded at graduation. To qualify for magna cum laude, a student must achieve a 3.7 - 3.89 grade point average on a 4.0 scale with a grade of "A" on the Senior Honors Thesis/Project.

Cum Laude - meaning "with praise" is the third distinction awarded at graduation. To qualify for cum laude, a student must achieve a 3.5 - 3.69 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Special Honors Notation on Transcripts and Diplomas - Students graduating in the Honors Program receive In cursu honorum on their diplomas; qualified Honors graduates receive Latin designation. Students completing the 30 Honors credits with a GPA of at least 3.25 but less than 3.5 will have a “Completed Honors Program” designation. Those with 30 Honors credits but less than a 3.25 GPA or those with fewer than 30 credits will have an “Honors Program Participant” designation. University transcripts identify all Honors coursework as Honors.

Honors Identification in Commencement Program – Cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude are recognized at graduation ceremonies when the student has fulfilled all the requirements in the most recent prior semester. The University of Nevada, Reno commencement program at the graduation ceremony identifies all graduates of the Honors Program.

Honors Cording Ceremony – Students graduating in the Honors Program are recognized at an Honors Cording Ceremony and Reception to which graduates’ family and friends are invited to attend. At the reception, graduates are awarded stoles and faculty mentors are recognized.

Honors Graduation Celebration - Students graduating in the Honors Program are invited to an Honors luncheon held each semester to celebrate their Honors accomplishments.
