About the Program

Honors Students

The Honors Program at the University of Nevada, Reno seeks to provide students who are both academically talented and highly motivated with an undergraduate education that nurtures and promotes students' capacities to think competently, understand deeply, and act ethically. The Honors Program is committed to providing strong support for the development of these qualities among a select group of students who have demonstrated exceptional promise. The Honors Program is university-wide and compatible with all academic majors. Successful participation in the Honors Program gives highly qualified students the ability to become skilled in their specific disciplines and the personal satisfaction of having met and accomplished the most innovative and challenging program the university offers.

In accomplishing this challenge, students have opportunities to enroll in small, interactive Honors classes taught by outstanding professors, develop mentoring relationships with faculty, attend Honors academic and social functions, participate in programs for national and international study, take part in scholarly and professional activities, and graduate with Latin distinctions. The active Honors Student Association helps build a spirit of community among the members of the Honors Program.

The Honors Program offers students a rewarding curriculum of study. Honors classes are available in the University's core curriculum, in the student's major, and as electives. Students have a wide choice of courses, and they have latitude in choosing courses to fulfill Honors credit. All Honors students must complete the Honors Senior Thesis/Project, an independent, original scholarly or creative topic of interest to the student in the major; the thesis/project is directed by a faculty mentor for two semesters. Students are required to orally defend their theses/projects. The program is designed to fit within a student's educational program without the need for additional time or credits. In addition, students may earn Honors points by attending activities that provide enriching experiences.

A unique feature of the Honors Program is the Honors Residential Scholars Program, an Honors Living and Learning Community available to incoming first-year Honors students who chose to live on campus. Students enroll in a common core of Honors classes, participate in scheduled interactive activities with faculty outside of the classroom, and take part in programs designed to enhance academic and personal success. Honors faculty members join students for seminars, monthly dinners, intellectual discussions, and other activities such as attendance at the University Performance Arts Series and the Nevada Museum of Art.

Students interested in participating in the University Honors Program must submit an application. Admission for incoming first year students is based on the student’s academic record, SAT or ACT score, additional academic and extracurricular activities, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Admission for continuing University of Nevada, Reno, and transfer students is based on university grade point average, additional academic and extracurricular activities, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

The current Honors Program began in 1989 and now enrolls 400 Honors students.
